Once you discover your dream, the next step is to discover yourself. Without knowing who you are, you can’t become what you want. But how will you know who you are? What are your capabilities? What are your strengths and weaknesses? Don’t worry. There are many ways to find that out and that is what I will be covering here today.

Check whether you are Left Brained or Right Brained. Much of what is known about brain function is owed to Roger Sperry. In general, the left hemisphere is dominant in language: processing what you hear and handling most of the duties of speaking. It’s also in charge of carrying out logic and exact mathematical computations. The right hemisphere is mainly in charge of spatial abilities, face recognition and processing music. It performs some math, but only rough estimations and comparisons. The brain’s right side also helps us to comprehend visual imagery and make sense of what we see. It plays a role in language, particularly in interpreting context and a person’s tone. It is generally assumed that a Left Brained person is more suitable for professions that needs logical thinking, like Engineering, Medical, Scientist, Teachers etc. Whereas Right Brained person is more suitable for professions needing creative inputs, such as, Artist, Advertisement Executives, Psychologist, Interior Decorators, Journalists etc. There are different tools available online, but in my view the best is ask yourself. “What am I good at?” “Do I enjoy a solving a puzzle or mathematical problem” or “I excel in creative thinking and free wheeling discussions about various aspect of philosophy” These are just some pointers which can guide you towards deciphering whether your left or right brained person. At the same time, it is very much possible that both sides of your brain are evenly balanced and you are good at both logical and creative thinking (Even better for you as it gives you more options) Psychological Models Over time, different scientists and psychologists have created different behavioral models which can help us make the right career choice for ourselves. Two such popular models areDISC® (Dominance, Influence, Steadiness and Conscientiousness) The DiSC Model of Behavior was first proposed by William Moulton Marston, a physiological psychologist with a Ph.D. from Harvard. This model categorizes people in four different types which are Dominance Person places emphasis on accomplishing results, the bottom line, confidence Behaviors – Sees the big picture – Can be blunt – Accepts challenges – Gets straight to the point. THE BEST TOOL FOR EVALUATING CAREER CHOICES All the models that we have listed above are some of the most well established models in the world for deciphering human persona. But still there are a few downsides, specially for an Indian student. First, they are complex models and a bit difficult for a student to decipher. Second, the are paid and the price is in Dollars. So I started looking out for free alternatives that could be easily understood by a young mind. Fortunately, I could find one. That is MAPP Test from assessment.com. This is one of the most comprehensive tests (71 different questions) that I have seen which actually maps your persona against more than 1000 different career options. You can take the test at here for Free. But there is a twist here, though the tests are free the results are not. They will hide the top 10 matching profession from the results and and they will be unlocked only if you pay for it. If you can afford, I believe, it will be worthwhile to pay for it (It is cheaper than the cheapest android phone money can buy). But what if you can’t? Don’t worry, I have a trick using which you can still derive value from the test. assessment.com allows a user to match his/her profile against 5 career of their choice. And that is for free. Most of us have a fair idea about what professions we want to choose. So all you need to do, is to match your profile against your chosen career and you will know how good a match you have in there. P.S. Always complete the MAPP Test in one go and be absolutely honest with your answers. Finally, we need to remember that there can always be abberations and exceptions in any model. Therefore you should not accept the results of these tests as the holy grail. But at the same time, these tests are important because they can pinpoint our strengths and weakness and thereby help us discover ourselves. Discovering who you are today is the first step to being who you will be tomorrow.
